Our mid 19th century Southern dress is based upon the Furr Homespun dress currently owned by Vicki Betts of the University of Texas. This extant gown dates to the 1860s and is an excellent example of what women in the American South were wearing in the middle of the 19th century. It consists of a loose fitting bodice with a slightly elevated waistline. The skirt is gathered into the waistband as is the bodice to create a one piece gown.
