Historical Notes: Mid 19th century work dress

The Furr Homespun Dress of Stanley, NC

Maggie May's mid 19th century Southern dress was based upon the Furr Homespun dress currently owned by Vicki Betts of the University of Texas. This extant gown dates to the 1860s and is an excellent example of what women in the American South were wearing in the middle of the 19th century. It consists of a loose fitting bodice gathered under the bust and center back only. The skirt is gathered into the waistband as is the bodice to create a one piece gown.
