Maggie May's 1860s era day dress for an upper class lady/lady of wealth is based upon the extant gown (shown left) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This extant gown is reported to be a wedding gown made of silk and cotton. It is of American provenance and dates to 1860.

This gown bodice is fitted closely at the waist and bust. The combination cap and wide bell- shaped sleeves slope far off the shoulder. The skirt is attached to the bodice and it most likely closes with center front with hook and eyes. The buttons placed on the left side of the bodice are most likely decorative.
